Carla Young
Carla R. Young is an administrator, diversity champion and Director of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access at Cranbrook Schools. She is a member of the Association of Independent Michigan Schools (AIMS) Diversity Committee and has presented at the NAIS People of Color and annual conferences since 1987. She is past chair of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) Equity Committee and board member. She currently serves on the Oakland County Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council. Carla has taught over 35 years, at University Liggett School and currently at Cranbrook Schools. She serves as department chair and English teacher in Cranbrook's Horizons-Upward Bound program. She facilitated the foundational work of the Cranbrook Engagement Collaborative and its commitment to build, model, and cultivate full inclusion in the Cranbrook Educational Community.
She is a certified facilitator of the National Seeking Equity and Educational Diversity (SEED) Project, a peer-led professional development program that creates conversational communities to drive personal, organizational, and societal change toward greater equity and diversity. She is also a certified Courageous Conversations About Race Practitioner and Gender Spectrum Trainer. Carla holds a BA in Psychology from Oberlin College, a MA in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College, and a Graduate Certificate from The International Institute for Restorative Practices where she is an Instructor for the IIRP. She and her husband Michael are the proud parents of four adult children, two cats and a dog.
